Allergies Q & A

What Treatment Options are Available for Sinus Problems?

Individuals who experience constant sinus infections or congestion may benefit from balloon and endoscopic sinus surgery. These procedures involve the use of small balloons and endoscopes that are used to open the sinuses and airways, allowing normal breathing patterns to occur. Individuals who constantly suffer from allergies may have scar tissue throughout their sinus cavities. The balloon and endoscopic procedures help to keep the airways open after the scar tissues have been removed. Along with these procedures, doctors often recommend the use of decongestants and antihistamines to help keep the airways free of congestion.

Can Allergies Irritate Sinus Problems?

Allergies are caused by exposure to various irritants or allergens. When the mucous membranes of the sinuses are constantly exposed to allergens and other irritants, they begin to become inflamed. Over time, repeated sneezing and the exposure to the irritants can aggravate the sinuses to the point where they are always inflamed and sore. Prolonged inflammation will often lead to the formation of scar tissue. When scar tissue builds up in the sinuses, it can lead to constant congestion, irritation, and nosebleeds. Individuals who have had upper respiratory allergies for several years may eventually have chronic sinus problems.

Are Allergies the Cause of Sinus Infections?

Allergies can eventually result in serious sinus infections. The constant creation of mucous and other fluids in the sinus cavities can cause the tissues to become raw and inflamed. If bacteria or a virus would enter the nose or nasal passageway, a sinus infection can result. Infections are a possibility anytime a lesion or open wound is present. Constantly blowing or wiping the nose can cause raw flesh to develop leading the way for an infection. An infection that starts in the throat or lungs can work its way up to the sinus cavities. Sinus infections should be treated as soon as possible to prevent them from traveling to the lungs, ears, or eyes.
